Nine Peacock Flower Seeds

To unassuming eyes, the Peacock Flower is a proud bush with bright, beautiful flowers. However, it is believed that enslaved women would crush its seeds and ingest the powder to end their unwanted pregnancies. These quiet acts of resistance have long been overshadowed by more noticeable forms of rebellion that were led by men. Therefore these patchworks honour the resilience of women who reclaimed agency over their bodies in the face of exploitation.
This series also serves as a reminder that women today continue to not have full autonomy over their bodies. Ultimately, it is an ode to those that have suffered at the hands of gender and race based violence.
