Blue Foetus 5

Foetus Seeds is a textile collage series, depicting bean-like shapes that represent watery foetuses; babies in the wombs of unruly mothers, who were thrown overboard slave ships during the Middle Passage. In this mythological reimagining of history, their unborn children are rescued by Yemaya, the Yoruba Ocean Goddess, who helped them form a sub-Atlantic Black civilization. This work seeks to fill the gap that was created by the loss of these women and their knowledge. Rooted in Afrofuturism, Foetus Seeds imagines an alternative reality that dignifies these female histories.
